Adrian Peterson Expected to Play Sunday Despite Child Abuse Indictment

 Sept. 15, 2014

The Vikings lost 30-7 against the Patriots in the absence of their star player

The Minnesota Vikings announced Monday that star running back Adrian Peterson will attend practices and meetings this week and is expected to play Sunday despite being indicted on child injury charges last week. Peterson turned himself into authorities over the weekend and was released on $15,000 bail.
Vikings owners Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf released a statement Monday that announced Peterson will continue to play as the legal system investigates the allegations of abuse. “We believe this is a matter of due process and we should allow the legal system to proceed so we can come to the most effective conclusions and then determine the appropriate course of action,” they said. “Currently we believe we are at a juncture where the most appropriate next step is to allow the judicial process to move forward.”
Peterson, 29, turned himself in Saturday in Montgomery County, Texas after he wasindicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child for “whooping” his 4-year old son with a switch in May. He could face up to two years in state jail.
The six-time Pro Bowler was deactivated from Sunday’s game against the Patriots, which resulted in a 30-7 loss for the Vikings.
In a statement released Monday afternoon on the Vikings website, Peterson expressed remorse for hurting his son but denied that he is a child abuser. “I am not a perfect parent, but I am, without a doubt, not a child abuser. I am someone that disciplined his child and did not intend to cause him any injury,” he said.
“I want everyone to understand how sorry I feel about the hurt I havebrought to my child,” he said. “I never wanted to be a distraction to the Vikings organization, the Minnesota community or to my teammates.”

  1. Only reason that the Vikings are going to let him play is because without him they suck.

  2. I think that some parents take disciplining their child way to far sometimes but now days you cant even spank your child without being accused for abusing them. I do think though that Adrian took it way to far. I don't understand why you need to hit your kid with a stick.

  3. I see that he was just disciplining his child, and 4 year old children can be extremely annoying. The real question is would anyone have cared as much if he wasn't famous.

  4. What ever the reason, abusing a child in anyway is awful.
I don't think that he should be able to play.

  5. I, personally, think he should take the consequences for his actions. i think he went to far to the point of leaving welts and cuts on his child. I understand and agree with child discipline to a point, but not this far. Additionally, his child was only four and they aren't going to listen the greatest but that doesn't give you the right to beat them. Find alternative ways to punish your child.

  6. When you are a professional athlete or a very famous person you need to watch what you do very closely. I don't think what Adrian did to his son was right by any means, the child s is only four. I believe in discipline but his acts of discipline went too far.

  7. He is still going to get arrested if they find him guilty, the only thing is that the NFL is still going to let him play and not suspend him like they did to Ray Rice. I have no support for child abuse. I do believe in discipline though, without it kids would be even worse than they are right now. I just think Adrian probably took it a little farther than he needed to.

  8. I think people need to look at Adrian's background before they make assumptions. Adrian was a kid who grew up on the streets who was also punished this same way if he did any wrong. I'm not saying this is the right way to discipline your child but what I am saying is that, the way we think is more likely opposite of what Adrian thinks. He has distilled in his mind that punishing your child with a switch is a correct way of punishment. This is more than likely distilled in his mind because this happened to him when he was the same age and older. He even reoccurred that being hit with a switch is something that kept him off of the streets. Now again I am not saying this was the right thing to do to your four year old son but many Texas folk used this way of punishment. Another fellow team mate of Adrian's recalls that he wishes he would have gotten punished by a switch rather than what he got. Now what Adrian needs to take into account is that times have changed and he is a very highly looked upon role model as an NFL superstar. He should have known better than to use a switch on his four year old child, and using his accounts as a child is merely an excuse in a way. He very well could have found other ways to punish his child, because i'm guessing his kid does not run the risk of being tied up on the streets like he did.

  9. I agree with wounded coyote. Adrian believes that is the correct way to discipline people. That is how he was disciplined when he was younger and hes says that is what kept him on the straight and narrow. I still believe what he did to his child is wrong.
