Cruel & Unusual Punishment

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that sentencing juvenile criminals to life-in-prison is "cruel and unusual punishment" Agree or Disagree, Why?

  1. I strongly disagree. Somebody doesn't get life in prison for stealing a drink or punching someone. To receive a sentence of life in prison somebody has to do a very terrible act. It shouldn't matter what age they did it at, if someone does an act that bad they deserve whatever punishment is handed to them including life in prison.

  2. I disagree with that because if they did something bad, they need to realize their actions have serious consequences and they can't just do it and get a slap on the wrist.

  3. disagree, many kids will think i cant go to jail for life so i guess its worth it. There would be A Lot more violence i believe from this their will nothing stopping the will power of murder

  5. disagree, because if he/she did something bad enough to be with a charge of life in prison your darn right they deserve life in prison!

  6. I certainly agree that this is cruel and unusual punishment. Whether or not that is a proper punishment is a different question entirely. It may be a necessary punishment, but I would say sending a kid to life in prison is both cruel and unusual.

  7. i disagree. i think in order to get life in prision you have to do something really bad like kill someone, and it shouldnt matter how old you are. people say just because your under 18 you cant go to prison so some people might think that you can get away with alot more things. i dont think that is right.

  8. i disagree if you get life in prison you didnt just screw up or make a mistake! you did something so wrong that you are not able to live with the rest of society and just because your young doesnt let you off the hook! people need to face the consequneces and even though its not fair that thier gonna be living of the american tax payer he really doesnt deserve to be in society

  9. if they are charged with underage drinking or stealing or fighting they yes i agree that its crule but if they were charged with murder or rape or anything serious like that then i disagree because no matter their age its still wrong

  10. I disagree. If someone is still a kid and they kill people then the punishment should be life in prison the age shouldn't determine the type of punishment that they get.

  11. I think it depends on how critical there crime was, i dont think its right for killing someone but life in prison i think is too far.

    1. I disagree. If you kill someone, you deserve to have life in person. They killed an innocent life. Not cool.

  12. I agree, a child has their whole life ahead of them to straighen their life out. However, if they repete their first offense more serious mesaures should be taken.

    1. woah! its not like they were screwing around to get life in prison they had to kill multiple people! i mean sure i get it if they were stealing something but if your killing people your messed up in the head and dont deserve to see society ever again

    2. How would you feel about Ray Lewis Robert Rasmussen? He may very well have murdered somebody, yet he just won the Super Bowl. Do you feel that he "does not deserve to see society ever again"?

    3. Okay so this kid just murdered someone and you let them off and try to change their life. The kid doesn't change and goes and murders someone else. If he would have been put in prison, he would not have killed the other person. By putting them in prison it would have saved a life or lives.

  13. There should never be "Life in Prison" What the justice system needs to create is an alcatraz type area where if a person commits one of these TERRIBLE acts they should be sent away to this area with all the other Super Bad People.

    1. I think that they should be sent to your house which is where the Very Super Bad People live.

    2. Could you please elaborate on this "Very Super Bad People House"?

  14. I disagree, if anybody is going to be dumb enough to screw there life up at a young age, they should have to pay for it.

  16. Starting your life in prison and being forced to live it out there is horrible. Unless its a triple raped quadruple murder a teenager shouldn't be forced to spend his/her life in prison. Kids can change when they become adults and may change so they should be able to get a second chance.

  17. I agree that it is cruel and unusual punishment. What if a person goes in at age 13 and by the time they are 18 they decide to make better for themselves. Life in prison for juveniles is just setting them up for failure. Think of all the wrong things in prison that could change a willing and able 18 year old into a discouraged bitter person. There is rape, gang violence, and murder in prison. You are even more subject to these events if you are younger and less experienced.

  18. I disagree. Because if someone were to kill someone then they should get life in prison, no matter the age. If they are able to kill someone then they are able to sit in prison for it.

  19. I neither agree or disagree ,because what happen if you killed someone when you were really young like a teenager you should'nt go to prison for life, but if you like a 40 yr old man an kill something just because you want to they should go to prison for life

  20. I disagree because they should have life in prison for what did and they deserve it to. because killing someone you should get life in prison right off the bat when people do that.

  21. I disagree because they should have life in prison for killing someone. It shouldn't matter the age of the person, killing someone is way wrong and you should definitely be punished.

  22. I disagree, because if you can handle killing someone you can deal with sitting in prison for the rest of your life.

  23. I think that saying life in prison for a juvenile is cruel and unusual punishment in wrong. If that person, no matter the age, did something bad enough, they should get the proper punishment. If an adult murders someone and gets life in prison, then what is the difference if a juvenile murders someone?

  25. i hate people who abuse there athorite and start hitting kids and just abuse them cause they were abused when they were younger . it gioves thenm no right to do anything to there kids

  26. i disagree with this but i also dont agree with having so many people in prison for life. i think the death penatly should be put in place., and before you all freak there should be a full process in witch they are given it. first they must be given life in prison then their file should go to a jury were they do some intesive research into the indivdauls life to see if that person does deserve death or if it was just a one time insident, then after there decison is made then go back to trail were not only the judge but also that jury has to approve of the death of the indivdaul.
