What is societies responsibility to the event in New Town, Conn? Are mass shootings a social problem and what needs to happen so tragic events like this don't happen again?
Mass shootings are a social problem. I am greatly annoyed when people classify it as a mental illness. They are not ill, they feel betrayed or worthless, problems that society can fix.
The societies responsibility in response to New Town should be making towns aware of the dangerous things that could happen and help prepare them. There is a social problem because the person who is shooting obviously needs help. What needs to be done is background checks before selling guns and maybe if the problem is caught soon enough he or she could get help and the problem would have never happened.
I think the responsibility of New Town should be to have the ability to come together as one to support eachother and focus on the physical, mental, and emotional stability of everyone involved in the shooting, whether it be the kids, the parents, or the teachers.
They shouldn't put it out for the world to see, the killer didn't just kill the kids because he hates kids, he did it becuase he wanted his name to be known for something bad

maybe the parents of these people should have been more strict and consequential in some cases im not saying that its always the parents fault but sometimes a better up bringing will stop stupid crap from happening
Mass shootings are a social problem because they obviously have mental problems or are angry at society for some reason. I really don't know if there is a solution to this problem, because crazy people are going to do it anyways.
Mass shootings are social problems because, you never know what they went through. They could have issues that no one properly addressed. I think theres no stopping them, if they wanna do it they will.
Mass shootings like this are definetly a problem and precautions always should be taken. But the major problem is that shootings like these are very unpredictable. It is quit possible that the shooter had a rough childhood growing up and blames society for his problems.
i think that mass shootings are a mental thing because why else would a normal person want to kill innocent people, but then again some people could have bullied or done something to make someone else feel like nothing.
I also think that mass shootings happen because people have like a mental break down and then they go crazy and start killing innocent people because they dont know what else to do and they probably dont care who they hurt or kill.
i think that mass shooting is more of a mental thing because something always seems to be wrong with the person that is doing it there has never been someone in a normal state of mind killing..
I think that society should work hard to prevent thses form happening. By working on new gun control laws that make it illegal for civilans to have acuss to military grade wepons, these mass shootings might happen less. But, if someone is going to shoot someone, they won't have a problem with getting a illegal wepon from the black market or something. So, there may not ba a good solution.

I think it is some what of a societal problem. I think when it is classified as a mental illness that is just an excuse to get out of a harsher sentence. The person doing the mass shootings is usually antagonized by a person or some event takes place to upset the person, so you could say society is to blame do to their offensive actions but hey I get offended ever day but I don't commit mass shootings. That is no excuse.
