What We Don't Know About Our Students -- And Why We Don't Know It

  1. I thought the last paragraph said it all!

"It was particularly disconcerting for me to realize that when the priorities of adults and kids diverge, we simply assume that ours ought to displace theirs. Stop wasting your time learning song lyrics when you could be doing important stuff -- namely, whatever's in our lesson plans: solving for x or using apostrophes correctly or reading about the Crimean War. We tell more than we ask; we direct more than we listen; we use our power to pressure or even punish students whose interests don't align with ours. This has any number of unfortunate results, including loss of both self-confidence and interest in learning. But let's not forget to number among the sad consequences the fact that many students quite understandably choose to keep the important parts of themselves hidden from us. That's a shame in its own right, and it also prevents us from being the best teachers we can be."

    It's all about communication between people: student/teacher, parent/sibling, husband/wife, brother/sister, or boyfriend/girlfriend.

    Information is everything!!

  2. ya that teacher was mean to him but when she left the student talk and had a good time, it tells you that people are different around other people.

  3. I think that students keep stuff privat because they dont want their teachers to judge them and they dont want their teachers to get them in trouble.

  4. I think this situation depends on the school setting as well. In smaller schools students are more apt to be themselves in both classroom and out of school settings as they become closer with the staff whereas in larger schools students can easily live two lives in and out of school.

  5. In a larger school there is not usually a teacher/student relationship like there is in a small school. In a big school i don't think the students care as much but in a small school you are judged more than anything. I believe the teacher should not get to involed though because other wise its just then being nosey. Some situations are fine but some teachers take there power way to far.

  6. I think the girl simply found song lyrics more interesting than finding x so she thought she might as well enjoy what she's doing. It's more learning something you want to learn.

  7. Yes i completely agree. When im in school and i'm learning topics i have an interest in they stick and i actually remember them and learn. Also many students feel that some of the stuff they know others wouldn't care to hear so there afraid to share. Sharing what you think is good to voice your oppinion and you can discuss off of it.

  8. Absolutley, maybe if teachers could use those thigns in our lives that we enjoy more in a leanrning way, we'd be smarter.

  9. Connecting the topics we learn to real life expieriences or things we do makes learning so much easier.

  10. yes it does and i think if teachers tried to do that more i think we would learn, understand, and care more about what we learn in school. most of the time when we dont know how the topic directly affects us or how it might in the future we dont care and it goes in one ear and out the other and we have know idea when we have a test or descution or anything like that.

  11. I think that teachers don't need to know personal things about students. i dont want to know things about my teachers. i just want to go to class, do my work and get out. People dont need to know things about me. i dont really like when we have to do personal projects in school about our lives because it seems like it shouldnt matter. it should be my choice if i want to share things with calssmates/teachers.

  12. I think there needs to stay the bounderies between students and teachers. When teachers get attached to students they end up being favorets or the opposit thing can happen
