I think that in this time period it is very hard for people to find jobs. Back then these middle aged people got out of high school there really was no need to go to college they would just get the family farm or inherit their parents money or business and they would be okay. Today you need a college education for almost everything. It is also so easy in the time period to just sit back and get addicted to alcohol or drugs. People are just thinking that it doesn't pay to go back now to get an education because they are already 50+ years old, so whats the point? So they just sit at home and get addicted to drugs or alcohol. Now a days people know that they are going to need an education in the future to get a job and stay healthy and working until the retirement age.
i disagree that it is hard to find a job fresh out of high school. You can still find plenty of well paying jobs that will sustain a lifestyle, but you can not be picky. i as a high school graduate with no further education could go work for any construction company and be getting paid at least 15/hr starting off at that company, wages would vary between jobs but wont be too different
