Can You Come to Jesus Without Church?
A viral video raises old theological disputes.
By JONATHAN D. FITZGERALD
YouTube videos go viral all the time, but sermons rarely do. Enter Jefferson Bethke, a young "spoken-word" poet who recently posted the video "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus." It has been viewed more than 10 million times in the past 10 days.
The video opens with an eerie soundtrack and the phrase "Jesus>Religion" in a stark, white typeface. His poem begins, "What if I told you, Jesus came to abolish religion?"
In a polished, hip style, he continues with such controversial questions for four minutes: "If religion is so great, why has it started so many wars? Why does it build huge churches, but fails to feed the poor?" Mr. Bethke describes religion as no more than "behavior modification" and "a long list of chores." This leads him to conclude, "Jesus and religion are on opposite spectrums." And his grand finale: "So know I hate religion, in fact I literally resent it."
Other YouTube users have posted response videos, and countless bloggers have commented on the quality of his poetry, the sharpness of the production and the errors in his theology. Among the most ardent critics are Catholics who see Catholic-bashing in Mr. Bethke's attack against organized religion, particularly in his suggestion that religion is "just following some rules."
On his blog "Bad Catholic," Marc Barnes highlights Mr. Bethke's indictments of religion for building huge churches at the expense of the poor and telling "single Moms God doesn't love them if they've had a divorce." Though Mr. Barnes agrees with some of the poem, he writes, "I can't help but think, in the midst of all this, that this hating-religion-loving-Jesus thing is the logical consequence of Protestantism."
Yet the Protestant response has been strong as well. Kevin DeYoung, a blogger at "The Gospel Coalition," a popular Reformed Christian site, wrote that "amidst a lot of true things in this poem there is a lot that is unhelpful and misleading."
Mr. Bethke, he notes, "perfectly captures the mood, and in my mind the confusion, of a lot of earnest, young Christians" who interpret the word religion to mean "self-righteousness, moral preening, and hypocrisy." The problem, Mr. DeYoung notes, is this is not what religion is, and Jesus didn't hate religion. Jesus was an observant Jew, Mr. DeYoung points out. Jesus clearly said he didn't come to abolish the law or ignore the prophecies but to fulfill them. In fact he founded the church and instituted the sacrament of communion.
Mr. DeYoung is correct to identify Mr. Bethke's sentiment as typical of his generation of young evangelical Christians. The notion that "Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship" has been echoing through the sanctuaries of evangelical, and particularly nondenominational, churches since at least the 1970s. Mr. Bethke's own pastor, Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, promotes a distinction between "religious people" and "Jesus people": "Religion is about me" but "Christianity . . . is about Jesus," Mr. Driscoll preached in 2007.
As Mr. Barnes of "Bad Catholic" notes, this is a particularly Protestant sentiment that can be traced back to theologian Karl Barth, who often distinguished between "revelation" and religion.
This is the kind of Christianity in which I was raised, where a man with a high school degree and a "calling" can lead a congregation, where a pastor can spend millions advertising an apocalypse only he predicted, and where a church burns the Koran and leads to the unnecessary deaths of innocent people halfway across the world.
Stating that religions build churches at the expense of the poor, as Mr. Bethke does, turns a blind eye to the single greatest charitable institution on the planet. Blaming religion for wars ignores the fact that the greatest mass murderers in the 20th century—indeed in all of history—killed for nonreligious reasons. And advocating for a kind of Christianity that is free of the "bondage" of religion opens the door to dangerous theological anarchy that is all too common among young evangelicals and absolutely antithetical to biblical Christianity.

Yes, you can come to Jesus without church. This is because in order to come to Jesus, you need to accept him into your heart as your lord and savior. A church can only inform you of this and help you do it. But even then, you dont need church to tell you how to do it. Some person that is already a christian can tell you how to do it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because jesus is not supose to judge you about what you do so why does the church judge you for not going if acording to god we are supose to accept everyone. Someone can be a believer of jesus and a non believer of church.
ReplyDeleteI believe you can "Come to Jesus without church" because I've been put through the catholic practices and feel like Im praying to the church not god. While watching the news and paying attention to world events Ive noticed throughout history most wars are fought between two different religions but they believe almost the same exact beliefs. So I do believe that we do not need a church to be in touch with god.
ReplyDeleteThis is so accurate. I'm a spiritual person but not religious. I believe in God and the morals of Christians but I dislike going to church because I believe churches are often very judgemental and I also feel like I'm praying to my pastor and church rather than God or Jesus Christ himself.
DeleteI think churches are just a builidng block for religion. You don't need to go to church to be a practicing christian. It just helps you express your faith.
ReplyDeleteWhile I believe that it is possible to come to Jesus without the church, I do think that the church is necessary to further that relationship with Him. Regarding his comments about religion and war, Ecclesiastes 3:8 states that there is a time for war. And from a personal standpoint, I can tell you that my church has a program, free of condemnation, for the single mothers of the community.
ReplyDeleteHKD13 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God- Romans 14:10 True you are not supposed to judge others, but it's God's job to judge you. It's called judgement day.
ReplyDeletei agree with you, HKD13. I dont think that you need to go to church to be able to be a believer in God. Why wake up early to go listen to a worship service that most dont even listen to and has no meaning in your life when you can just be a believer in him.
ReplyDeleteI believe people do not need the church to get in touch with God. Just an open heart. For many reasons I believe the church has corrupted its purpose. It now stands for power hungry men. The Catholic Church is basically a big buisness that was founded for money and power.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to have religion at all you don't have to show what you believe in if you don't want to and you don't have to believe in anythin' if you don't want to. It's all about what you want the world to know about you. If you don't care you don't care. If you don't believe you can choose to show it or not. but you don't have to go to church just to show that you belive in somethin'. It doesn't matter at all.
ReplyDeleteThe church is not supposed to judge, but then we aren't supposed to be judging anyone either. Including the churches and those that attend them.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible says we are supposed to spread the word and tell people about our savior Jesus the church is one form of doing that. So, Angelwolf i don't understand why someone would believe in something and not tell others about it. If you truly believe in God you also believe that everyone that has not accepted God into his/her life is going to hell. Why would you not tell people about God if you believe in him?
ReplyDeleteThis video refers to things that the church isn't doing, corruption, and what the church has become. Church is supposed to help your relationship with God religion gets in the way of this sometimes. Some people end up worshiping religion instead of God. Christian religions, since they are created by people often pick parts of the Bible to believe in and push other things aside.
People sometimes hide behind religion and theology thinking they can understand God "My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the LORD. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine." we will never understand God.
Many people have commented about the church when he is talking about religion. The church by definition is faith, family, and friends. Religion is a state or institution. I believe that religion is what has corrupted the church.
I firmly believe you do not need church to come to Jesus. You can accept him in anyway you want. Church isn't a bad thing but is defiantly not necessary to come to Jesus.
ReplyDeleteBubbles do not use words from the BIBLE. Even though people should not judge, everyone is judged no matter what, even by GOD. No matter what it will be judged by Church, God, Friends, Family, or anyone really. No matter what church or religion you belong to, you are bein' judged. Your beliefs are JUDGED by anyone and everyone, includin' God. The Case between Jesus and Religion doesn't really matter because in everyone's mind everyone will always be judge. We even judge ourselves on our choices and beliefs we make. So for people not to want to be judged by the fact of what church they go to, what religion they are, even if they go to church, or even have a religion doesn't matter. People can hide what they want just so they don't get judged by anyone else but God himself. Therefore anyone will jude you no matter what your choice about anything is.
ReplyDeleteyes I believe that you dont have to sit in a church pew in order to believe in Jesus. I belive that Jesus and your faith in inside of you.
ReplyDeleteYou should not be worried about being judged when your in church. All you have to do in church is do what you believe and not worry about what people think about you and you should do that in everyday life too because you only live once.
ReplyDeletefaith and the believing in jesus is inside you dont need to go to church to prove it
ReplyDeleteEveryone is judged no matter what. By any one and even by God. Anything that you do you get judged and sometimes you even judge yourself and think about what you have done. If its wrong or not you did it. It was a sin and you can only make up for it. No body is perfect, we all make mistakes we just need to learn from them and not going to church is one that you shouldnt be judged. You can still believe but not attend. Im a firm believer of it
ReplyDeleteRight now, everyone that is talking about judging on this blog is judging them for judging. Including me, it is in human nature to judge, most people do not realize that they are judging in the first place until someone points it out to them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Grandview, if you say do not judge a person for what they thing then you are being hypocritical because you yourself have already judged them even if it is in the deepest darkest corner of your mind you have already judged them without even noticing you doing so. if you really did not judge someone no one would have commented on this blog in the first place but we already have so our judgements have been made what is said is done its as simple as that
ReplyDeleteEveryone shows judgement that is true. but showing judgement also shows who cares and who doesn't.
ReplyDeletei agree i think that you can. i dont think that you need to be in church. it happens all the time with out people being in church. if you are supose to be in church to be with God why do you pray at the dinner table and before bed.
ReplyDeleteYes, you don't need church to be saved and be a follower of Christ. But it is such a hard life to truly live without human support.
ReplyDeletei think that you can it just shows that you truely believe in your religion and it shows that you care. Faith and believeing in jesus is in you. dont mean you have to go to church but its best if you did because i mean he did die for us, the least we could do is go to church to show that we respect him.
ReplyDeleteI truly believe that you don't need religion to follow the ways of Jesus. The way to salvation is through Jesus Christ not the church. I do believe though that the church can help you on your way to living the way Jesus intended.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great video. I agree with everything he is saying, religion and churches I feel have become very strayed from Jesus. So much has been revolving around money and greed and there are few good churches out there. If you find a great church than that is good, but you can certainly do it on your own and build a relationship with God without a church.
